I was standing in my kitchen, ordering a Nothing Bundt cake for my daughters upcoming birthday, when my overflowing jar of extra sourdough discard caught my eye. I decided to ditch the bundt cake and see what I could whip up with what I had on hand.   • parchment paper
  • wire rack
  • stand mixer with paddle attachment or whisk attachment, hand mixer
  • bowl of a stand mixer + separate bowl or two mixing bowls
  • wooden spoon or spatula
  • measuring cups
  • 9-inch cake pan (x2)

Honey Vanilla Sourdough Discard Cake Ingredients

wet ingredients

  • sourdough discard (or active sourdough starter)
  • vanilla extract
  • raw honey
  • butter, room temperature
  • coconut oil
  • milk (can sub water)
  • large eggs

dry ingredients

  • all purpose flour
  • granulated sugar or brown sugar
  • baking soda
  • baking powder

Honey Vanilla Sourdough Cake

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes


  • ½ cup sourdough discard active starter
  • cup all purpose flour
  • tsp baking soda
  • 3 tbsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup butter salted (if unsalted add 1 tsp salt)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup sugar


  • Pre-heat your oven to 350℉
  • While oven is warming up, coat your pan(s) in coconut oil
  • Add your dry ingredients to your stand mixer bowl. Mix on low for about a minute.
  • Add your butter, again mixing on low until combined.
  • In your other mixing bowl, combine your wet ingredients; sourdough, milk, eggs, oil, vanilla, and honey.
  • With your mixer on low to medium speed, slowly pour wet ingredients into the mixer bowl.
  • Mix until just smooth.
  • Pour batter into cake pan(s)
  • Bake for 35 minutes
  • Let cool before frosting, or serve warm with butter!

  1. The eggs aren’t listed in the ingredient list! Since the instructions said eggs, plural, i did 2. I didn’t notice until right before baking that something was off though. Looks much better with eggs added, glad i caught it in time. Just wanted to point out so you could add! I hope 2 was right 🤞🏼🤣
